Bisi Bele Bhath is a rice, lentil and vegetable based dish that originates from Karnataka in South India. This dish is a balanced one pot meal, in which protein, carbs and veggies are cooked with pungent spices. Simple and complex at the same time, this is one dish that arouses the senses and ignites the appetite of even the poorest eater.

Ingredients & Health Benefits

The Bisi Bele Bhath powder is prepared using the following ingredients:

  • Coriander seeds
  • Dried red chillies
  • Channa dal
  • Urad dal
  • Curry leaves
  • Coconut oil
  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamon
  • Cloves
  • Marata moggu
  • Jaikai

A handful of regular ingredients with the Indian spices found in the Indian pantry are used to make this taste enhancing powder.

Directions for using Bisi Bele Bhath powder

  • Cook rice, toor dal and desired veggies.
  • Add tamarind water, chopped tomatoes, salt and turmeric powder and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Add Bisi Bele Bhath powder and continue cooking for another 5 minutes.
  • Fry cashews with little ghee and add to the same.
  • Season and enjoy your meal.

This dish is served piping hot with condiments like boondi(fried chickpea flour), potato chips or cripy fried discs or papadums.

Bisi Bele Bhath as we like to call, BBB or Triple B. It is authenically made in Karnataka. To break up the terms, ‘Bisi’ means piping hot in the native language, ‘Bele’ indicates the use of lentils in the dish and ‘Bhath’ is a generic term for all rice dishes made in Karnataka.
